The HR-PES Short Circuit for April 2011

The March meeting on Arc Flash has been rescheduled for May 3rd, same Al Fresco in Newport News venue. The Speaker, Adeeb Hamzey safely returned to the States later than planned, but is back into his normal routine. That meeting will start earlier than the regular PES routine, so that Adeeb can return to the Richmond area that evening.
SoutheastCon was enlightening on opportunities to help Section and Chapter membership grow. Not grow in membership numbers, but grow our members as professionals in the engineering community. One focus is to increase the number of members who elevate in grade from Member to Senior Member. May newsletter will have criteria to elevate, and in June PES will schedule a couple of nights to support submitting all interested and eligible IEEE members of the section (PES Members is not a requirement for this). Contact jennifer.ammentorp@ieee.org if you would like to support this effort. More details and eligibility criteria will be posted in the May segment of the PES Short Circuit.
Another area important to the Section is engagement with our Student sections. This can be a win5 situation for the student, the member, the school, and the employer; as a mentor to even one of our five student sections. Dr. Nare at Hampton University illustrated many benefits to mentoring a student section. This access to entry level engineers is an excellent opportunity for the employer, having a more personal exposure to job candidates. Students get insight into the business culture through contact with mentors from the professional sector, and can improve the skills for entry into the job market. Universities win with an increased number of graduates getting hired, and the company acquires a job candidate who recognizes the value of investing in self development. The section sees higher retention of first year and GOLD members, stimulating the Section program and activities. Two hours a quarter from one member can make a significant difference in Section and Chapter activities.
Thank you for your participation in IEEE. HRPES is open to suggestions for meeting topics and venues that interest you!

Jennifer Ammentorp

April 2011 From The Chair

Thank you to Mühlbauer in Newport News for the tour and demonstration of their manufacturing equipment in March. Everyone could relate to the products that their equipment is used to manufacturer, from driver's licenses and passports to subway tickets. It was interesting to see the new applications for RFID and other technologies on display for die sorting.
In April we will meet at ODU for a technical presentation from Ed Larsen of SquareD on NEC requirements for low-voltage circuit breakers. This is an excellent opportunity to hear from an industry expert in this area. Mr. Larsen is involved in IEEE standards as well as other standards organizations.
IEEE is still looking for a volunteer for the Secretary position, please contact officers-r3-hamptonroads@ieee.org if you are interested and would like to get involved.

From the PES Corner - March 2011

PES is off and running in 2011! January was reporting and HR-PES qualified for High Performing Chapter in 2010. February was a small tour of AetnaWire Manufacturing Facility supported by Members Rick Williamson and Dawn Zhao. There was great positive feedback from this event, and it will be something PES does again in the future.
Feb 21st was the first HR-PES Chapter Awards presentation and Networking meeting at Kelly's Tavern in Hampton. Dawn Ostenberg presented Jennifer Ammentorp with the first Outstanding Engineer Award for establishment and continuation of the HR-PES Chapter.
HR-PES will be sponsoring two networking opportunities a year, as one means of linking student members with local professional mentors. This is very important for several reasons! Students need a link to future professions, Industry needs a personal link to future employees, professional membership can gain a better knowledge of local resources for their own career development as well as keeping abreast of the rapidly changing job climate in our area. If nothing else, remember the USA desperately needs more home grown engineers! Please look forward to future networking opportunities on vTools, even if you can only stay for a part of the meeting. This function is open to all IEEE members snacks provided cash bar available. Student advisors are encouraged to invite electrical engineering students to these events. This is a no cost event, but registration is required to reserve enough space, and an idea of how many appetizers to order .
The March Meeting for Arc Flash has been postponed. Speaker Adeeb Hamzey from the Richmond PES Chapter was on assignment in the Middle East at the start of the year and due to come back Feb 15th. This is part of why no abstract for the meeting had been posted on vTools. The Chapter's thoughts and prayers are extended to Adeeb and his family that they are all well safe, and the Arc Flash meeting will be rescheduled in the future.
The Chapter also welcomes Rick Williamson who has stepped up to fill the chapter's Vice Chair vacancy. Please welcome and thank Rick for his willingness to donate some free time in keeping the chapter rolling!
Your suggestions and feedback are welcome. Currently HR-PES is soliciting for topics and Venues for an April 6th meeting.

Mühlbauer Tour

Please join us for the March technical meeting, which will be a tour of the Mühlbauer facility in Newport News. The tour will include an interactive demonstration of their cutting edge manufacturing equipment used to produce ID Cards, Passports, RFID's and others. This is an exciting opportunity to visit a local high-tech business; I can say the Mühlbauer tour in 2009 was very well received by the Hampton Roads IEEE members. The tour is free to everyone (members, guests, and students), please register ASAP so that we can get a good count for refreshments.
I'd like to thank Mickey Wilson of Harger for his presentation last month on lightning protection systems. Jennifer Ammentorp, the Hampton Roads PES Chapter Chair, will be traveling to SoutheastCon March 17-20 in Nashville to represent the Hampton Roads Section in Region 3 activities. If you have any ideas on how IEEE can better serve its members, please feel free to email the officers list or myself so that we can relay this information to Jennifer. I would like to welcome Mr. Richard Williams to the IEEE HR Executive Committee; he will serve as the 2011 Section treasurer.
Volunteer opportunities are still available within the Hampton Roads Section, please contact the officers list if you are interested.

Help Address Global Humanitarian Challenges Through "Engineering for Change"

Dear Colleague:

As you may have noticed, IEEE has initiated recently several new efforts toward humanitarian and global development challenges. This undertaking represents recognition on our part of the great potential of our members (engineers and experts in computing and technology) to provide effective assistance and leadership in regions with under-developed infrastructure, and in areas where the infrastructure was damaged by natural or human-made disasters. Many of our IEEE members have told us that they have strong interest in taking part of such activities, and we have reached out to other professional associations to explore opportunities for joint action.

I am pleased to announce that as a result of these efforts, IEEE, ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), and Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) have launched jointly a new online platform called EngineeringforChange.org (E4C). The E4C platform provides engineers, technologists, computing and networking experts, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local community advocates with tools to collaboratively address humanitarian and global development challenges. Members of the E4C community - working together - will design, apply and share knowledge to develop technical solutions for emerging challenges in local communities throughout the world.

The E4C Web site was designed to provide users with a convenient and user-friendly way to learn, collaborate, and share data, experience, and insights - leading to enhanced problem solving. As part of this growing community, E4C users will be able to:
  • Post challenges and problems in order to gain understanding, perspectives and experience from other E4C community members;
  • Work collaboratively and virtually on project teams;
  • Make use of a growing, open-source archive of documented solutions and related information submitted by organizations from around the world;
  • Keep updated with news and information related to the forefront of engineering and global development;
  • Learn from expert practitioners on applying engineering in developing communities;
  • Track projects of interest.
We are inviting you today to join the E4C community and share information and expertise on humanitarian projects that match your professional profile.

To learn more and become an active participant in this important initiative, visit the Engineering for Change Web site, the E4C Facebook page or Twitter feed.

Sincerely,
Moshe Kam
IEEE President and CEO

60th Annual Tidewater Science Fair Solicits Your Support

Tidewater Science Congress
John Oakes, Treasurer
5016 Churchill Court
Virginia Beach, VA 23464
October 15, 2010
Dear Sir/Madam:
The Tidewater Science Congress solicits your support for the 60th Annual Tidewater Science Fair, scheduled March 12, 2011 at Old Dominion University's Webb Center. Since 1951, the Tidewater Science Fair has encouraged middle school and high school students from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach to become directly involved in the processes of research and develop the technical writing skills needed to clearly and effectively communicate the results of their experiments. By encouraging interest in the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), we hope to inspire and encourage students to study the "hard subjects" that prepare them for careers as leaders of the workforce of the future.
The Tidewater Science Congress encourages and assists teachers and school districts in developing science fair programs that conform to protocols that ensure that student projects will be eligible to advance from regional competition to the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Representing their schools at regional, state, and national level competitions gives important public and peer recognition to students who focus their interests, talents, and efforts on STEM. The honors these students earn in state and national competitions build the region's reputation as a place where parents can be confident that their children receive a quality education and businesses can be confident of finding a high quality workforce.
The restrictions associated with public funding prior to 2004 limited eligibility to participate in the Tidewater Science Fair to students from a limited number of public school districts. Since 2004, support from industry, professional organizations, and individuals has freed us from those restrictions and allowed us to open the Tidewater Science Fair to all public school, private school, and home schooled students from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach. This has given teachers and schools throughout Tidewater an incentive to include science fairs and science projects in their curricula by assuring them that their students will have an opportunity to advance to higher levels of competition.
Please consider a personal or corporate contribution to help the Tidewater Science Congress continue a 60-year commitment to encouraging young people to develop their interests in STEM. We must raise approximately $15,000.00 per year for expenses which include the costs of organizing and staging the fair in Norfolk and funding the Grand Prize winners' travel to Los Angeles in May to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
Funds donated to the Tidewater Science Fair are accepted and administered by the Tidewater Science Congress, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered with the Internal Revenue Service (TIN: 52 1385891). The Tidewater Science Congress will provide receipts for your tax deductible contributions and will recognize you as a sponsor in the printed Science Fair Program and at our website.

Contributions

The Tidewater Science Congress is eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. You can verify this status online by searching Internal Revenue Service Publication 78, Cumulative List of Organizations described in Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Point your browser to www.irs.gov/app/pub-78. Our TIN is 52-1385891
Your contribution before February 2011 would be greatly appreciated. We will use your contribution to defray the expenses of organizing and staging the 60th Tidewater Science Fair and funding Grand Prize Winners' travel to the 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Any balance on hand after meeting these expenses will be carried forward to support the 61st Tidewater Science Fair in 2012.
