From The Chair - February 2011

Lightning Protection Systems for IT Data Centers

IEEE Hampton Roads begins our 2011 technical presentation series with talk from Mr. Mickey Wilson of Harger (www.harger.com) on lightning protection systems. This presentation should be of interest to a variety of local engineers with its implications in power as well as computer engineering.
The March meeting will be held at Mühlbauer in Newport News, and will include a facility tour. Mühlbauer manufactures a variety of products including RFID manufacturing systems. In March they will have a new die-sorter to demo. This is a chance to see some high tech electronics manufacturing equipment.
We have an exciting technical presentation series planned for the rest of 2011, including topics from academic research to industry. Please check the Hampton Roads Section website for updates regarding meetings.
The culmination of our 2011 schedule will be a banquet to celebrate IEEE Hampton Roads' 50th Anniversary. Please contact me if you have any suggestions about a technical topic for the meeting, and if you would like to volunteer to help with planning.
A few other upcoming meetings this year include:
  • ECHR Engineering Excellence Banquet (Town Point Club) February 25
  • Virginia Peninsula Engineering Council Engineering of the Year Banquet (Point Plaza Suites) February 26
  • IEEE SoutheastCon 2011 (Nashville, TN) March 17- 20
  • IEEE Sections Congress 2011 (San Francisco, CA) August 19-22
I would like to thank all of those who have continued to volunteer for the Hampton Roads IEEE Section. Currently we have open volunteer positions, and I encourage anyone who is interested to contact myself or other section volunteers at officers-r3-hamptonroads@ieee.org to find out more information. We can use help at any capacity, so please do not hesitate to contact us.
I look forward to seeing everyone Feb. 17th, please come participate and get in involved in IEEE!

Regards,
Jason Naramore
