From the PES Corner - March 2011

PES is off and running in 2011! January was reporting and HR-PES qualified for High Performing Chapter in 2010. February was a small tour of AetnaWire Manufacturing Facility supported by Members Rick Williamson and Dawn Zhao. There was great positive feedback from this event, and it will be something PES does again in the future.
Feb 21st was the first HR-PES Chapter Awards presentation and Networking meeting at Kelly's Tavern in Hampton. Dawn Ostenberg presented Jennifer Ammentorp with the first Outstanding Engineer Award for establishment and continuation of the HR-PES Chapter.
HR-PES will be sponsoring two networking opportunities a year, as one means of linking student members with local professional mentors. This is very important for several reasons! Students need a link to future professions, Industry needs a personal link to future employees, professional membership can gain a better knowledge of local resources for their own career development as well as keeping abreast of the rapidly changing job climate in our area. If nothing else, remember the USA desperately needs more home grown engineers! Please look forward to future networking opportunities on vTools, even if you can only stay for a part of the meeting. This function is open to all IEEE members snacks provided cash bar available. Student advisors are encouraged to invite electrical engineering students to these events. This is a no cost event, but registration is required to reserve enough space, and an idea of how many appetizers to order .
The March Meeting for Arc Flash has been postponed. Speaker Adeeb Hamzey from the Richmond PES Chapter was on assignment in the Middle East at the start of the year and due to come back Feb 15th. This is part of why no abstract for the meeting had been posted on vTools. The Chapter's thoughts and prayers are extended to Adeeb and his family that they are all well safe, and the Arc Flash meeting will be rescheduled in the future.
The Chapter also welcomes Rick Williamson who has stepped up to fill the chapter's Vice Chair vacancy. Please welcome and thank Rick for his willingness to donate some free time in keeping the chapter rolling!
Your suggestions and feedback are welcome. Currently HR-PES is soliciting for topics and Venues for an April 6th meeting.
Yours in Power,
Jennifer Ammentorp

Mühlbauer Tour

Please join us for the March technical meeting, which will be a tour of the Mühlbauer facility in Newport News. The tour will include an interactive demonstration of their cutting edge manufacturing equipment used to produce ID Cards, Passports, RFID's and others. This is an exciting opportunity to visit a local high-tech business; I can say the Mühlbauer tour in 2009 was very well received by the Hampton Roads IEEE members. The tour is free to everyone (members, guests, and students), please register ASAP so that we can get a good count for refreshments.
I'd like to thank Mickey Wilson of Harger for his presentation last month on lightning protection systems. Jennifer Ammentorp, the Hampton Roads PES Chapter Chair, will be traveling to SoutheastCon March 17-20 in Nashville to represent the Hampton Roads Section in Region 3 activities. If you have any ideas on how IEEE can better serve its members, please feel free to email the officers list or myself so that we can relay this information to Jennifer. I would like to welcome Mr. Richard Williams to the IEEE HR Executive Committee; he will serve as the 2011 Section treasurer.
Volunteer opportunities are still available within the Hampton Roads Section, please contact the officers list if you are interested.
